Naples, Italy – The Birthplace of Pizza
Famous pizza pilgrimage would be complete without a stop in Naples, the city where it all began. The traditional Neapolitan pizza gets its simple yet captivating taste from San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella di bufala, a few leaves of fresh basil, and hand-kneaded dough which is baked in a wood-fire oven.
They predominantly make one of two:
-
Margherita – pays tribute to Queen Margherita of Savoy, featuring red (tomato), white (mozzarella), and green (basil) for the italian flag colors.
-
Marinara – famously known for the lack of cheese. Marinara has garlic, oregano, olive oil, and tomatoes.
The UNESCO recognition and protection of Neapolitan pizza demonstrates how signficant it is.

Named after the bustling city, New York-style famous pizza is as popular as the Big Apple. This type of famous pizza is well known for its large, thin, and flexible slices, which can be easily folded in half and eaten with one hand.

Chicago, USA – The Deep Dish Delight
Our next stop is Chicago, home of the Legendary deep-dish pizza, which makes this stop more than just country thick – deep. Unlike pizza, deep-dish is more pie like, with a buttery pie crust set in a deep pan. It has slices of cheese, meat, vegetables, and chunky tomato sauce on top.
Also known as knife-and-fork pizza, it is rich, hearty and can fill up anyone. It seems as though deep-dish pizza has moved from snack territory registers to celebration meals., which is why landmarks like Giordano's and Lou Malnati's have long become iconic.
São Paulo, Brazil - The South American Take
“São Paulo treats pizza with the utmost esteem,” we learned in class. With unique local twists on pizza, like catupiry cheese and chicken or even green peas with corn, Brazil is definitely a top pizza consumer in the world.
A typical night in Sao Paulo involves family members gathering over a cold beer and a pizza (that’s served on a wooden board). Contrary to popular belief, the crust is thinner, though softer than New York-style crust. Regardless of shape and taste, the one thing we can agree on is that the love for pizza is palpable.
Tokyo, Japan - Precision and Innovation
The Japanese have their own precise way of doing things and this stands true in Tokyo's artisan pizzerias. Following traditional Italian practice, they use Japanese precision: perfect fermentation, quality-controlled imported ingredients, and a high standard level of commitment ensures quality.
Now for the head-turning part, Japan has unique toppings that may take you by surprise: squid, mayo, seaweed, corn and even teriyaki chicken. These add a new meaning to fusion of East and West.
Istanbul, Turkey - Lahmacun, eluded the Turkish Pizza
Lahmacun is neither a customary Pizza near me nor does it fall under the category; however, it is frequently termed the "Turkish pizza." Its width describes a round bread which is flat and thin, while its length signifies the traditional style of Turkish Lahmacun – minced meat (beef or lamb), onions, tomatoes, herbs, as well as spices amalgamated together. Put in the oven until it’s crisp, become rolled with parsley, lemon juice, and at times even some salad.
Lahmacun is known to be one of the many features in Turkish cuisine and remains one of the fastest-selling street food. It demonstrates how pizza, i. e. a base flatbread with toppings, can arrive in so many forms and varieties.

When it comes to Indian pizza, it is known for its color, flavor and bold spices. Most fast food franchises have also used Indian flavors in their menus, so expect to see paneer tikka, butter chicken, or tandoori veggies toppings in Mumbai. Along with the toppings, they add masala sauces, spicy chutneys, and sometimes even sweet sauces.
From thick cheese burst crusts to the classic thin ones, these franchises have offered new spins on their original recipes for India’s diverse population.8. Rome, Italy– Pizza al Taglio
We head back to Italy, this time to the capital-Rome, where Pizza al Taglio, meaning pizza by the cut. For this dish, tall rectangular aluminum pans are used to cook the pizza which has a thick crust. The pizza is sold by weight making it perfect for single-handed consumption. Pizza al Taglio is topped with rosy mortadella , Italian cold cut, alongside pistachio cream . For dessert, potato pizza topped with rosemary and nutella is available.
